Tasting the Bitter Sunlight
Have you ever had that gut reaction to your surroundings, some physical sensation that something isn’t quite right? Maybe a squirmy, uneasy feeling in your stomach or an acrid taste on your tongue that makes you want to leave the scene? When the nematode C. elegans encounters an offensive sensation—whether a pungent, potentially dangerous odor (such as those associated with fungal parasites), e...
متن کاملChemoreception: Tasting the sweet and the bitter
Our understanding of the molecular basis of taste transduction has lagged behind that of other senses, but now a signalling protein-the G protein alpha subunit gustducin-has been shown to be taste-tissue specific and essential for both bitter and sweet tastes.
متن کاملFacial affective reactions to bitter-tasting foods
24 Differences in food consumption among body-weight statuses (e.g., higher fruit intake 25 linked with lower body mass index (BMI) and energy-dense products with higher BMI) has 26 raised the question of why people who are overweight or are at risk of becoming overweight eat 27 differently from thinner people. One explanation, in terms of sensitivity to affective properties of 28 food, suggest...
متن کاملResponse of pigs to bitter-tasting compounds.
Two-bottle preference tests were done to determine whether pigs detect bitter-tasting compounds. Four standard bitter compounds and nine bitter-tasting pharmaceutical compounds were tested. Pigs detect and avoid taste compounds that humans perceive as bitter-tasting. A dose-response to varying concentrations of bitter tastants can be measured.
متن کاملRats fail to discriminate quinine from denatonium: implications for the neural coding of bitter-tasting compounds.
Recent molecular findings indicate that many different G-protein-coupled taste receptors that bind with "bitter-tasting" ligands are coexpressed in single taste receptor cells in taste buds, leading to the prediction that mammals can respond behaviorally to structurally diverse "bitter" tastants but cannot discriminate among them. However, recent in situ calcium-imaging findings imply that rat ...
